Samuel Ernest Wharton was born in 1900 and studied at the Nottingham School of Art (1923-27) and the Birmingham School of Art (1928-29). He exhibited from 1925 to 1939 and lived at Beeston, Nottingham and Horrabridge, Devon.
The picture is very well painted by an artist who clearly has a real understanding of the countryside. The hounds are running in front of the huntsmen on an Autumn day and there is a distinctive church on the hill. On the reverse of the canvas is inscribed "S. E. Wharton, Horrabridge, Devon" and it seems likely that this is a Devon scene. |
