Charles Cundall (1890-1971) was a landscape and portrait painter and pottery and stained-glass artist, who was born in Lancashire and spent part of his childhood in the Philippines and Australia. He studied at the Royal College of Art, Slade School and in Paris, Italy, Sweden and Russia. He exhibited widely including at the Royal Academy (60), the Royal Water-colour Society (34), the New English Art Club (81) and the Fine Art Society. There are very few artists who are elected to the Royal Academy and the Royal Water-colour Society and who exhibited so many pictures.
This watercolour is delightfully free of constraints but at the same time shows Cundall's ability to draw superbly and capture the essence of the scene. Although not signed the painting is titled on the reverse and authenticated by Mrs Cundall. |
