Hercules Brabazon Brabazon

His unusual and unforgettable name alerts us that this was someone with a remarkable talent. Born in 1821 in Paris and educated at Harrow and Cambridge, he studied music in Rome and later met and was influenced by many great masters. He travelled extensively in France, Italy, Spain, Palestine, Egypt, North Africa and India. In 1867 he was elected to membership of the prestigious Burlington Fine Arts Club and in 1891 to the influential New English Arts Club. John Singer Sargent was a great admirer of his work and wrote the forward to his 1882 exhibition.

In 1982 Chris Beetles held the first of his major selling exhibitions in London and these have cemented Barbazon's reputation as one of the most imnportant, creative and distinctive watercolour artists of his time.

This picture could be Pont du Tarn at Albi in France. It is very typical of Brabazon's style and colours and has his distinctive figures. It is signed in pencil with his usual HBB initials.
